Did you hear? The circus is in town! Or at least it will be once your child’s circus party gets under way. Whether it is for a sports or school team celebration or birthday party, a circus party theme offers many decorative variations. But where to start? You may be asking yourself this very question if it is up to you to put a circus in your back yard. The circus is full of so many wonderful elements and activities to draw your creative inspiration from when pitching the big top in your backyard. Think it is too difficult? Think again! Here are some ideas to help you sort through the millions of options you have to choose from for every detail of this party. Relax. Breathe. Have fun. It is, after all, a party, right?

1) When it comes to invitations, you’re going to want something that pops, that grabs your guests upon seeing it and doesn’t let go. You have the option of printing your invitations off of your computer, or you can make them from scratch. There are several circus themed stickers that can be purchased to customize that invitation even more. Either way, they need to be bright, cheery, and full of circus-life. A big red circus tent on the front of the card with the words “You’re invited…” written in fun, vivacious letters will get the point across without giving too much away. You can also use a cute teaser, such as “The Circus is in Town” printed on what appears to be the opening of a circus tent.

You can either have a folded invitation, so that the guest would have to open the card to see what is inside, or a flat, single-sheet invitation, in which you would simply write the event information on the back of the card, or even right on the front. Make sure to include any specific details, such as “Bring a towel,” or “Dinner will be served.” You may also want to include some fun details about what activities will be at the party.

2) Circus activities can include “Circus Monkey See, Monkey Do,” which hosts the same concept as Simon Says, but with a circus take. For this game, you would simply substitute the words “Monkey Says” instead of “Simon Says”. For added competition, the children can compete for a wonderful circus prize as the last player standing.

Another fun option is relay races, where players have to complete a certain number of tasks in big, baggy clothes or big clown shoes. A bean bag toss, juggling lesson with oranges or light balls and pin-the-nose-on-the-clown are all great variations of traditional party games. Another favorite activity is a water balloon toss game. In this game, players are in teams of two and have to toss a water balloon back and forth to each other without letting it break. A dry balloon game is a fun way to entertain and give out prizes. You write possible prizes on little sheets of paper to put in the balloons. Blow the balloons up and each child tries to break the balloon open to receive his prize note. They will either receive the specific prize listed on the note or you can let them select one from a “circus chest” full of goodies. There are a plethora of other options as well as these for circus games, so use your imagination and be creative.

3) For food, you can rent or buy a popcorn machine or a cotton candy machine. Handing out bags of popcorn or sticks of cotton candy will be a great hit with the kids. Funnel cakes, hot pretzels, pizza, nachos, and ice cream are all great ideas for food for your circus party. Roasted peanuts served in the traditional red and white snack bags are a great treat as well, as long as guests have no allergies to them. You can even make cupcakes with “confetti” on them, using crystallized sprinkles.

4) You can often find temporary backyard “big-top” tents that can be set up relatively inexpensively. This will give you a real circus feel without breaking the bank. Think of tents that are often used in yard sales or at art fairs. In the tent, you can a have face-painting booth where kids can get their faces painted like monkeys, or lions, or clowns. Colored hair spray is often very popular along with face-painting. Don’t forget your circus temporary tattoos as well.

To add clowns to the party, party supply stores often sell face paints, big red noses, costumes and wigs of all colors for a friend or relative willing to “clown around” at the party while keeping the children entertained. Long, slender balloons can be purchased to make balloon animals for guests. If you do not know how to do this, many party supply stores often sell how-to booklets with very easy instructions for creating many balloon animals.

For additional decoration ideas, don’t forget the animals at the circus. Circuses often entertain with bears, lions, tigers, monkeys and elephants. If you have run out of other circus ideas, don’t forget that you can often find balloons, paper plates, napkins and wall-decorations featuring these popular circus animals.

Your child’s circus party doesn’t have to be a large stress factor in your life if you do not want it to be. Simply ask your child what she would want at the party and work from there. Visit a party supply store once you have an idea and check out the circus themes that they have available. You may find that they have sets that contain everything that you could need for a circus party. You can also piecemeal different supplies together to create an overall circus effect Circuses are all about creativity and fun, so keep those two things in the back of your mind and you’ll be on your way to planning a great party with superb circus party supplies.
