Sharks might be the big bad terror of the ocean, but kids often love and are fascinated by them. Whether this is because of the way sharks are sometimes portrayed as sympathetic characters in animated movies or because they are just powerful animals that dominate their environment, kids relate to sharks and love shark-themed parties. So think about turning a room into the house into a deep-sea adventure and throwing a shark party!

Shark party supplies are available widely, whether you are looking online or at gift shops. While there are some shark party kits on the market, and you might want to follow them, you can also think about augmenting the supplies and ideas in those solutions with ideas of your own. Adding your own touches is often a good way to ensure a special event turns into a special memory for everyone involved. The only limit to finding ways to include the shark theme in all aspects of the party is your own imagination. A good place to start is to include the kid in the planning of the party (unless it’s a surprise). Kids will often have great ideas – some practical and others not so much – but it will get them excited and thinking about how to make it a great event.

Following a list of party considerations and ideas for integrating sharks into the theme of the party.

Start with the list of invitees, which will help you determine your overall budget and thus how much you can allocate to buy the supplies that will have a connection to the shark theme. Once you have the list, it’s time to think about creating the invitations. Invitations can be made out of paper sharks, or drawings of sharks, or even regular cards that have had “bite marks” cut out of them with scissors.

Whether you make your own invitation cards or buy some from the store, they will need to include certain details. These details should include the occasion of the party, the date, and time, and what if any instructions you wish to provide about gift giving. You will also want to provide RSVP information. Or you can take photographs of sharks and hand write the details of the party on to the photograph, before folding it and putting it in an envelope for mailing. Whatever choice you make, the invitations should let kids know through what the party will be like and should start to get them excited about attending.

There are a lot of different creative ways to create shark cards. You can start by compiling a stack of your dramatic photographs of sharks in their native habitat. You can photocopy one photo and use it for all the invites or you can use a different site for each invitee. You can also think about finding other references to sharks, like from the professional ice hockey team in San Jose, California.

These photos have other purpose for the party as well. They can be used to decorate the space where the party is being held, as placeholders for a table, as napkin rings and in a number of other ways as well. Think about inventive ways to integrate special aspects of the shark into the party and its planning and preparation.

Next , you want to think about activities for the party that relate to the theme. A natural of course, would be a party at a swimming pool. If you elect to go this way, you can think about getting blow up sharks for the kids to play with in the pool.

Once you have the place for the party, you want to think about how to decorate the space for the party. Again, photographs are very useful in bringing the theme into a room in the house, if that’s where the party is being held. If you plan an outdoor party, there are specially made balloon and streamers with shark themes that can be used to help people get in the spirit. If you plan an indoor party, consider hanging blue sheets around the room and netting and various sea-related items like shells and starfish.

At the party itself, think about how to integrate the theme in to all the various parts of a typical party. Some of the things to think about are plates, cups, silverware, table cloths. All of these items can be purchased with shark related themes on them. You might be able to find some with teeth marks in them as well.

Cakes can always be made to represent the theme as well. Your local cake maker can give you ideas, but shark cakes can be made for the party. Alternatively, you can have a cake made that shows a scene of a shark being caught by a fisherman. There are also small shark candies that can be put on top of a cake or on cupcakes. Shark ideas can tend to the gruesome and for older kids this is fine, but if younger ones are going to be around consider how frightening this might be for them before moving forward with the more bloody ideas.

The theme can carry through to food and drinks for the party as well. You can always serve sharkmeat, but this is not likely to be universally accepted. So, again, think about using a knife to take bite marks out of sandwiches or hamburgers. You can also get shark-shaped molds to shape hamburger with. With the drinks, you can add colors to fruit drinks so that drinks look blue. After lunch, think about hanging a shark piñata, or having the kids fish for the shark.

If you do plan for games, think about different competitions. Fishing is one idea. You can also have different types of swimming competitions. And there is always pin the dorsal fin on the shark. And you can construct a shark out of cardboard and play “landshark.” You can get small “trophies” out of cookies frosted to look like sharks, or get special ribbons for the occasion as well.
